China announced recently that it is hastening constructing a road to bring China closer to Nepal and India. Chinese businessmen see this as an opportunity to sell their goods to India, Nepal and Pakistan. Mountain climbers on the other hand see the opening of the road as a chance to explore the highest Himalayan peaks on the Chinese side. While we know from Discovery Channel and encyclopedias that mountains like K2 and Mount Everest have been explored and conquered by humans more than a dozen times, there are still many unexplored mountains in the Central Asia especially on the Chinese areas. For a very long time, the Chinese government has been reluctant to allow opening the mountains to travelers but given their economic strength now and thirst for dominance, I think the government is only a few months away from allowing the first expeditions.
